February Newsletter

We are beginning the first full week of February recognizing Words Matter Week.  Although our words matter each and every day, this week is a reminder of the influence we can have on ourselves and others and how it is important to choose our words wisely.

Here is a look at the curriculum we will be exploring over the next few weeks:

Reading:

We have begun reading our next core literature novel, By the Great Horn Spoon! written by Sid Fleischman.  By the Great Horn Spoon!, is an adventure tale of a young boy and his butler on their journey to the California Gold Rush.  While completing this novel, we will be working in book clubs to develop our understanding of Historical Fiction, while continuing to practice our independent reading strategies to strengthen our reading comprehension skills.

Writing:

We are beginning the drafting phase of our Informational Report on the routes to the California Gold Rush, and will eventually move to revising and editing our writing to ultimately publishing our final draft.

Science:

In the science lab and our classroom, we are continuing our study of Physical Science by exploring heat energy, electricity, and magnetism.

Social Studies:

In History-Social Science, we are approaching our study of California’s eventual statehood and how the discovery of gold affected our development.  Eureka!

Math:

We are continuing our study of Fractions throughout this month.

New SRVUSD Volunteer Requirements

SRVUSD is implementing a new system for all adults who wish to volunteer on a school campus or drive/chaperone day and overnight field trips and athletic events. This new Volunteer Management System features a web-based software application that allows the District and all schools to better track and provide the appropriate level of clearance for school volunteers.

ALL adult volunteers will need to go through this new process. The District will NOT be asking parents to incur any of the costs associated with these clearance processes. For more information, and to begin the application process, click here.
